Has anyone spotted these 100+ small cells sprint is talking about in Houston

 I think I saw one yesterday while driving home from work.  I do not have a pic since I was driving but it looked similar to this design (see attachment).  Not sure if it was live yet but the assembly looked brand new. 

 

I had to put this attachment on my file server at home since its a large pdf.

Seems like a weird location to put a small cell in considering it is fairly close to a tower with 8t8r on Clay and Hollister. It is possible that it's either a T-Mobile or Verizon small cell. I know T-Mobile set up a few in downtown. Here are the Sprint macro towers near the area (Clearwire not included)

Thanks for checking.  I saw it and I never noticed it before and like i said it didn't seem live yet (cause I wasn't connected to it) or not even sprint like you say but by the looks of it it looked similar to the design on that pdf.

Found this information the other day for the north Spring area.

I have been watching the fiber being dropped and poles being swapped out in the area. They are a little behind on their timeline, but looks like they are trying to catch up. I have also started to have issues with text messages in the area getting duplicated messages 5 minutes apart. While no carrier is specifically mentioned this area has many issues with data connections with Sprint. One can only hope that Sprint will use some of these sites.

Could be tmobile or Sprint since both use the same vendor in the area. Only way to tell is to check with a Sprint or Tmobile device since it's externally the same.

 

That specific setup in the image appears to be typical of a Tmobile Nokia small cell setup.

Thank you for your quick reply!! I was hoping they were sprint small cells and not tmo but I have yet to connect to them :/  some (like the one i took a pic of) do not appear to be fully setup and live yet so I was keeping my fingers crossed and wishing they would come online and be sprints.  Now that you mention it they are placed where you would expect sprint small cells to be placed around that area near the macro sites... but they again tmo and sprint in my area share a lot of macro sites or are near each other.

Thanks, understood.  I knew mobilitie was the one doing it for Sprint but I wasn't sure who/what zayo was.  Are there any other vendors other than Mobilitie deploying for Sprint?

You are correct in that is a Sprint small cell.

 

That has a Nokia Mini Macro small cell eNB connected to a Nokia Dual Band LTE Relay for backhaul with the typical Alpha Wireless omnidirectional antenna on top.

Ha awesome! i happen to know that area is terrible when it comes to LTE coverage and capacity.. especially in and around the kroger right there.

I wouldn't worry about Kroger much longer.

 

But on a serious note, Sprint just finished up adding Mini Macros to the remaining Sprint towers that had faulty or incompatible Clearwire panels. The funny thing is that they left the Clearwire panels up on some of the towers so who knows how rent will play out for Sprint.

 

The next logical step is to decomission some of the Clearwire towers that are redundant (like clearwire towers that are across the street from Sprint towers) and add B25/B26 to others in prime locations.

 

As far as Small cells, that's all up to Mobilitie.

The fastest way to know if you're connected to a small cell is if the EARFCN is 40072 or 40270. Or that's at least the spectrum that is being used on small cells deployed during the Super Bowl.

Look at the PCI. They're usually in the high PCI range (400s).

Thanks for the info.  My main cell at home has a PCI of 442 but I am pretty positive its a clear converted site to mini macro.  Would the PCI for small cells be higher than that 442?

They converted a Clear site that was already broadcasting LTE on B41? Or was the Clear site not broadcasting LTE to begin with?

no it used to be a clear wimax site, about 1.5 years ago they converted it to b41 2.5 lte.
