Sprint will no longer be LAX about its network, because the Los Angeles Metro market will receive Network Vision/LTE deployment in 2012!

Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Monday, February 27, 2012 - 9:59 AM MST

Great rejoicing begins in the City of Angels! Now Sprint 4G Rollout Updates and S4GRU.com are prepared to announce the next and final First Round Network Vision/LTE market Sprint is planning to start deployment during 2012.

Los Angeles!

Sprint's Network Vision vendor Alcatel/Lucent will begin to deploy Network Vision and LTE in the Sprint LA Metro market. We are announcing the Sprint markets that will start NV/LTE in 2012, roughly in order. There is absolutely no guarantee of the order in which these markets come live, because there is a lot of variability in the plan.

Sprint has three different vendors, with several different crews in many markets at once. There could be final permitting and design delays, some vendors and/or crews will work at different speeds, weather issues and any number of unforeseen circumstances. First round market starts are much easier to predict, but second round and third round markets starts are predicated on the timing of the previous market wrap up preceding it. This is likely the reason why Sprint has elected not to announce these markets themselves at this time. But we know you don't want to wait for Sprint to tell you!

With these caveats understood, we are releasing the Network Vision markets in the order that they anticipate to start deployment. For Alcatel/Lucent, Baltimore and Boston will start first. DC, NYC and the LA Metro market may start before they wrap up. There could be some overlap if A/L has the manpower to execute them sooner, given that the design work and permitting associated with all 5 markets is largely complete.

Sprint's LA Metro market covers all of Los Angeles County, including Santa Catalina Island and Avalon. Orange County, North LA, Riverside/San Bernardino, San Diego and Lower Central Valley are in separate markets and will deploy at a later date. Alcatel/Lucent will be preparing for mobilization in the near future and work should commence on converting these 1,063 sites to Network Vision standards. The entire market will take more than 8 months to complete, but there will be many sites coming online monthly for first round LTE device holders to enjoy.

Sprint 4G Rollout Updates will continue to scour through the data and gather deployment information for your use. It is our intent to provide at a minimum, all the Sprint markets that will likely begin Network Vision/LTE upgrades in 2012. And we intend to do so in a series of articles over the next few weeks. We will not likely announce communities slated for 2013, because the dates we hold for 2013 markets appear very tentative and subject to change. With the many variables to sort out between now and 2013. Sprint could make significant shifts in deployment plans based on dynamic need change, funding, market permitting difficulties, etc.

With the release of Los Angeles today, that brings the total of Network Vision markets announced to twelve. Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Baltimore and Kansas City as announced by Sprint. Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Washington, D.C., New York City and Los Angeles Metro announced by Sprint 4G Rollout Updates.

Stay tuned to Sprint 4G Rollout Updates. On Wednesday we will be announcing the first Round Two market for Sprint Network Vision and LTE deployment. The dates of starts for Round Two markets will be very dependent on how Round One markets do to stay on schedule, and perhaps to some extent, Sprint cash flow projections.

Special thanks to S4GRU Member digiblur for creating the LA Metro Market map! Kudos!

Yes, for you observant S4GRU members. I made a mistake in earlier comments about the LA Market. Ventura, San Bernardino and San Luis Obispo Counties are the North LA market, not the LA Metro market.

Turns out that LA Metro market is indeed LA County only. Once digiblur's map appeared in my inbox this morning, I was set straight. When I saw North LA in all my charts before, I misinterpreted that to be North Louisiana. Maps are wonderful things! It should have been obvious to me, as Shreveport is an Ericsson market, not an A/L market. I'm human, what you going to do?

I am so happy that the LA market is getting NV. I was worried that my area was not getting covered by the LA Metro market but I live near Rowland Heights which turns out to be at the edge of the LA Metro market on the map.

I do have to worry that they may get behind on all these schedules. The first round is definitely a big first step, but it looks like it will take a lot longer to get the secondary markets up and running. With all the first rounders announced and with just 10 months left to the year, I really don't see too many more complete markets coming online. LA, NYC, DC, and Boston will all take 8 months at least.

What I was trying to say is it looks like primary cities will be available in 2012, but it will take more time to get smaller markets on NV.

Yeah, Justin. I know when Sprint wants the NV OEM's to get to the Second Round, but in reality we don't know how fast they are going to get there. Preliminary anecdotal evidence is that Ericsson is slightly ahead of schedule.

Samsung is bogged down in SFO and ORD with their starts. Although, they may hire up and start new crews and start second round markets before they are complete in SFO/ORD. However, I don't think that Sprint is big on accelerating even faster, because of the cash burn that will occur.

A/L is the vendor I'm most concerned about. We will be watching them closely!

Just so that I am clear on what is slowing down Samsung. What does "SFO" and "ORD" mean?

I had the same question about a DC market map. I'll stay tuned. I think it's interesting the AL cities seem paired by geographical area. When Boston is done NYC is close and when Baltimore is done DC is close. Seems like an efficient way to manage the crews and resources necessary for such an undertaking.

SFO= San Francisco. ORD=Chicago.

Thanks Chappo, for answering Leozno1's question. These are airport codes.

It's not so much that Samsung is being slowed down, it's just that they jumped in with two very large markets first. It will take them approx. 6 more months to complete them both before they move on to Round Two markets. Unless they hire up more crews and start up a Round Two market early. Which I don't think Sprint would endorse.

Samsung has two Round 1 markets, Ericsson has five Round 1 markets and A/L has another 5 Round 1 markets. 12 Round One markets in total.

Yeah I can say that the big cities will present multiple issues as many towers are not directly accessible by the companies as they are up on top of building towers. This could slow the process down in large cities. I expect NYC will be very hard because of the density.

Agreed Justin. Although I haven't seen a cluster deployment schedule for NYC yet, I would guess they would start in the Hudson Valley/Westchester and move their way inward to the outer Boroughs and then into Manhattan. That's what I'd do.

Rey. Stay tuned!!! The first market of the second round of NV deployments will be announced tomorrow. Check every Mon, Wed, and Fri to see if Detroit is on the list.

I am still waiting for some 4G love in the San Diego (apparently separate) market. Considering we do not even have WiMax (except a few sporadic towers where initial work was done on but never quite made it out of the gates)

I agree. But stay tuned. We will be talking about San Diego in the coming weeks. We are releasing info about a Network Vision/LTE market every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. And we have a live chat the night before where members get to hear a few hours in advance. Including one tonight. Stay tuned.

The map shows the LA CMA, yet it says it is for the LA Metro Area. Is the map depicting what is getting LTE, or will they just put LTE where WiMax is, which os about 1/2 what is on the map?

Every black circle represents a Network Vision site that will have LTE service when the market buildout is complete. Sprint LTE coverage will be much more substantial than the WiMax ever was.

Are the upgrades found here - https://network.sprint.com/ - part of the Network Vision upgrades?

No. Those are temporary network enhancements being done ahead of Network Vision. They usually involve additional T1 lines for internet backhaul, or additional 3G or voice carriers to help customers get to Network Vision upgrades.
