Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Tuesday, October 16, 2012 - 7:00 AM MDT

 

Four Sprint markets that were slated to begin Network Vision/LTE deployments in 2013 are beginning early. Good news for Sprint customers in the East Kentucky, Upstate New York East, North LA and Vermont/New Hampshire/Maine Sprint markets.

 

S4GRU has been able to confirm that Network Vision is now under way in these blessed locations. Three of these markets are being deployed by Alcatel Lucent (Upstate NY East, North LA & VT/NH/ME) and the East Kentucky market is being deployed by Ericsson. In fact, AlcaLu already has completed 3G upgrades in a small handful of sites in these markets, with 4G yet to come. Ericsson is just now beginning in the East Kentucky market and do not quite have any sites complete yet.

 

We currently do not have detailed schedules for these markets, so we will not be able to offer projected launch dates or completion dates at this time. However, near some of the first to be converted sites, Sprint customers will start to see improved 3G speeds and possibly even some prelaunch LTE signals.

Cities that will be a part of this deployment include Lexington, Frankfort, Danville, Somerset, London, Corbin. With only 119 sites, the market may wrap up relatively quickly. Sprint's North LA Market. Alcatel Lucent has begun Network Vision/LTE deployments in the North LA market. The market includes Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. 219 sites total. Click on Map to Enlarge.

Is this in effect because of the deal that was worked out with SoftBank?

 

An $8 billion cash infusion can have that effect. Even when you haven't gotten the money yet. Who knows, maybe Sprint's financials are in a much better position than we thought and they decided to speed up a bit.

I doubt it, I think it takes longer than a couple days to get from starting a tower to having 3G inspected and approved by Sprint. These towers have probably been worked on for quite some time.

I think the north LA deployment hints that Riverside/San Bernadino, Orange County and San Diego are most likely well under way also.

We also had our first Riverside/San Bernardino market site accepted by Sprint in this week's update. I think you may be on to something. I think AlcaLu is just letting loose all over SoCal. Kind of like how Samsung is around the Bay Area. Just completely ignoring market boundaries and just working any place they have a site ready.

So I just learned a few days ago (from this very awesome web site right here) that a Wimax protection sites exists in my hometown of Lexington, Kentucky and that 4G coverage for that reason is alive and well there. And now I learn today that NV is underway to provide 4G LTE as well. How funny that they should get awesome 4G speeds before I do here in Atlanta. I know Atlanta has launched but, let me tell you, it's extremely spotty and still unavailable at my house. So, I guess...go, Lexington! lol

I was surprised when I saw this post today. I expected upstate NY to be closer to the end of the deployment schedule. I wonder if any of the LTE sites here will be active by the time I'm eligible to upgrade on April 1.

This may be the reason why I have pulled the ehrpd signal when I did speed tests in various places within the Disneyland Resort the last two times I was there within the past 3 weeks. Upload and download speeds ranged between .5 - 1 mb which is blazing fast compared to the myriad of times I have visited The Mouse's House in the past. My phone could actually open heavy apps like MLB At Bat, ScoreMobile, Tapatalk in seconds; whereas, in the past these types of apps would time out on the Sprint 3g network.

 

We also had our first Riverside/San Bernardino market site accepted by Sprint in this week's update. I think you may be on to something. I think AlcaLu is just letting loose all over SoCal. So my family back east will have LTE up and running while we here in the 5th largest market get bupkis? for shame!!

 

I think San Diego is starting now too. But it isn't newsworthy because 2nd Round Markets have been announced. These were newsworthy because these are 3rd Round markets.

Why not CT? Kind of ridiculous. You can have 4g in NYC and Boston but nowhere in between...

CT over regulates cell tower construction and any work on the cell towers needing to be upgraded. IIRC it takes Sprint roughly 30-60 days or more to get approval for work on one cell site in CT.

You would think Louisville, KY would be a part of this deployment.

Louisville is in the West Kentucky Market. Work has already been started here.

Louisville is in the West Kentucky market. As per the latest NV sites complete map - which sponsors have access to - work likely has already begun.
