During the pre-launch phase, customers with capable 4G LTE devices may begin to see 4G LTE coverage in these areas and are welcome to use the network even before it officially launches. Sprint plans to announce commercial availability of 4G LTE in these cities in the coming months, at which point we expect coverage, performance and reliability to get even better. Eventually, the markets will fill in until coverage largely matches the existing nationwide 3G footprint. By the end of 2013, Sprint expects to have completed the nationwide build out of the all new 3G and 4G network.

Currently, Sprint offers the new 4G LTE service in 19 metropolitan areas: Atlanta; Athens, Ga.; Baltimore; Calhoun, Ga.; Carrollton, Ga.; Newnan, Ga.; Rome, Ga.; Dallas; Fort Worth, Texas; Gainesville, Ga.; Granbury-Hood County, Texas; Houston; Huntsville, Texas; Kansas City, Mo./Kansas City, Kan.; Manhattan/Junction City, Kan.; San Antonio, Texas; Sedalia, Mo.; Waco, Texas; and St. Joseph, Mo.

According to management consulting firm Chetan Sharma Consulting, mobile data is expected to comprise 95 percent of the global mobile traffic by 2015. Sprint’s network strategy, known as Network Vision, is designed to meet these growing demands. With Network Vision, customers can expect to benefit from an updated 3G network and new 4G LTE network, enabling expanded coverage, improved network reliability, better voice quality, and faster data speeds as the improvements are rolled out across the country.

“The mobile industry is going through an incredible change – smartphones, connected devices, and the seemingly unlimited supply of new applications and services are changing consumer behavior in dramatic ways,” said Chetan Sharma, founder and president at Chetan Sharma Consulting.

As part of its overall network strategy, Sprint is also doing a complete overhaul of its 3G infrastructure so that customers can enjoy better wireless signal strength, in-building coverage, and fewer dropped/blocked calls. These enhancements are now available to customers in several markets across the country, with significant deployment in Baltimore, Boston and Washington, D.C., and will continue to improve in the weeks and months ahead.

Sprint was the first national wireless carrier to introduce 4G on the WiMAX network in 2008 and began rolling out 4G LTE to customers on July 15 in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and surrounding cities

.Unlimited + Sprint 4G LTE = Game-changing wireless offer for customers

In today’s competitive wireless market, the value of unlimited has never been more apparent and Sprint is clearly the best choice in wireless. Customers with capable devices can combine Sprint’s all-new 3G and 4G LTE networks and enjoy unlimited data while on the Sprint network. Data usage continues to increase and consumers value Truly Unlimited data because it’s simple and straightforward – no metering, no throttling, and no need to share data, which increases the likelihood of a surprise monthly bill because of overage charges.

Coupled with unbeatable plans and fast devices, Sprint has been working hard to deliver the best customer experience in the past few years. The 2012 American Customer Satisfaction Index ranked Sprint No. 1 among all national carriers in customer satisfaction and most improved, across all 47 industries measured, over the last four years. And Sprint has been ranked Highest in Satisfaction with the Purchase Experience among Full-service Wireless Providers three times in a row by J.D. Power and Associates.

Sprint’s Network Vision project expects to be largely complete with the all-new network by the end of 2013. For the most up-to-date details on Sprint’s 4G LTE portfolio and rollout, please visitwww.sprint.com/4GLTE.

NO news about Detroit Market (Eastern Michigan)??? Are we still scheduled to start work in Oct., or did it get pushed to next year?

Any news on the El Paso - Las Cruces market? Will it be third or fourth round? How about South Texas? (Laredo)Thanks!

El Paso and Cruces are in Sprint's Albuquerque market and will not begin until some time in 2013. The schedules for 3rd/4th Round markets have not been finalized yet.

It amazes me that citys with populations as low as 12,000 are getting it in 2nd round, when are they going to take care of the almost 2 million poeple in Phoenix AZ. ?? I guess sprint certainly is not rolling it out based on population size lol. This makes no sense to me.

Sprint is not selecting smaller cities over larger cities. Sprint is deploying over entire markets, not just cherry picking large cities like Verizon. However, since Verizon is advertising they have added service to every backwater town, Sprint has started announcing them too to compete on a PR basis.

Hmm, Charlotte and Raleigh, but no Greensboro. Any inkling on when Greensboro NC could be started? Thanks!

Greensboro is in the Sprint Winston-Salem market and will not begin deployment until some time in 2013.

What happened to North Jersey? Or are we considered part of the New York Metropolitan area?

This list from Sprint includes communities expected to have enough service to launch through December. Places that will launch in January or later are not on the list. We have projected that Northern Jersey would launch in January, so we were not surprised to not see it on the list. http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/212-network-visionlte-deployment-running-list/

Northern Jersey is in a separate market than New York City and they will not be launched together.

Wait, did I see St. Thomas USVI on the list? LOL, yeah right.

I was actually surprised when my cruise ship pulled into St. Thomas a couple of weeks ago that my G3 that was set for "Sprint Only" showed 3G signal. Let me catch up on all my voicemails....so maybe that wasn't a good thing after all. Who knew there was a Sprint signal in the middle of the carribean -- although I suspect that the backhaul is pretty limited.

Thanks for the info Robert!

You have the Patience of a Saint.....

I will likely continue to excersise mine in San Diego, although the omission of my city and the pending release of the 4G LTE iPhone 5 has me at least looking elsewhere at coverage possibilites....

Some of us do understand, the average customer probably doesn't, and honestly the majority of us probably don't care. What we do know is that we have 4G devices but no signal, this is why we get frustrated and why many switch or consider switching carriers. We use the internet (and sites like this) to vent.

That makes no sense. So would you rather that you instead purchased a 3G only device, and preferred that Sprint only sold devices that were not "future proof"? Sprint has always publicly stated that the Network Vision project would be substantially completed by the END of 2013 - so I don't really understand why you believe that you are entitled to an earlier market launch in your particular market than what was promised (end of 2013 to be "substantially complete"). If you were promised that -- go back to the store and swap out to a 3G-only phone instead (probably can get a pretty good deal on the iPhone 4 or 4S now). Alternatively, Verizon has a reasonably robust LTE network now running on 700mhz which should give a decent enough initial coverage -- maybe you should switch over to them if that better solves your personal needs.

As Robert said, this is a website for wireless enthusiasts that is geared towards keeping up with information about the deployment of Sprint's Network Vision, and it is not a customer complaint site. I too wish that all of Sprint's 38k+ cell sites in its network (which took over 15 years to deploy) could be converted instantaneously overnight to LTE, but just as I wish I could be 6' 2" and be able to dunk a basketball, I've resigned myself to one of the facts of life, which is that not all things I wish for will happen as I would like.

Now that NYC made the list, I can go purchase the SG 3S

I got a S3 a few weeks ago to replace my back-up blackberry bold while keeping my WiMax EPIC, but after a few days, swapped it to be my primary smart phone instead. In my case, I found that the processing speed and memory (got 32GB this time), and superior display, etc of teh new S3 was so much better than my earliar Samsung, that the relative disadvantage of running currently on EV-DO network compared with a pretty thin Clearwire WiMax network was not sufficient to hold me back from fully converting to the new device given all its other advantages. So I now simply wait patiently for that 4G icon to light up,...maybe in the next few months I guess. In the meantime, I find that I mostly rely on WiFi anyway since I am either at home or in the office so have not really noticed that I am "missing" very much. But your situation may be different if you are out and about a lot and need alot of bandwidth all the time.

Sprint has a "global MPLS Access POP" in Saint Thomas and lots of fiber around there :)

St Thomas and St John have had Sprint for years now. My parents own a villa on St john and switched to Sprint for that reason. They were with Nextel before they merged.

I want to have 4G coverage if I buy a 4G device but at this point I just want decent 3G coverage.I know this isn't a complaint site but there's bound to be complaints, rants, and venting. It's going to happen unfortunately.

Hasn't been any complaints since this news release from Sprint. Wish they never released this. It caused all the cry babies to come out. If you want 4G so bad either move to a location that has it or swap carriers!!

Agreed. Many people are claiming they're switching to Verizon or T-Mobile. If I was out of contract right now I would switch but I have to wait until December, this is probably a good thing for me since there will most likely be some development on NV in the Phoenix area by then.

Looks like sprint is working their way around Detroit metro area since I'm sure we don't exist

Even allowing for the large negative bias of online forums, which attract the ranters, whiners and haters disproportionately, I have to wonder if this press release was a smart marketing move after all. We here know there was not much substantive news to motivate it, all PR.

But mostly, by listing these 100 cities large and small, Sprint seems to have pissed off everybody who lives in the other thousands of cities that were not listed. In the context of a customer base that is justifiably frustrated with the legacy network, it doesn't take much to light a firestorm.

New York-White Plains-Wayne, N.Y.

This is wayne NJ

Not Wayne, NY which is out in the sticks somewhere.

That is the standard term for the metro NY market, we use it a lot in real estate terminology.

From wikipedia:

New York-White Plains-Wayne, NY-NJ Metropolitan Division (11,732,233)

So for all the North NJ people, at least it looks like Hudson, Passaic and Bergen counties could get something.

Does anyone know if Mabank is in the Athens Texas market? We are about 15 miles away.

It is possible, but I would expect Athens to be completed first and Mabank to be after

You forgot Long Beach, CA and Glendale, CA. This map starkly illustrates how the entire western half of the country is being largely ignored. It's a shame.

So you want every cell tower to be upgraded at the same time? So that no one is left out? GO CRY ON ANOTHER FORUM!!

...and I see today that the charge for 4G has decreased to $8 a month, instead of $10.....smells sketchy to me.

Geez, not this again. You are misinformed or undereducated. Sprint does not assess a "4G" charge. It is a "premium data" charge for unlimited smartphone data usage. Whether the data usage is EV-DO or WiMAX is irrelevant.
