During the pre-launch phase, customers with capable 4G LTE devices may begin to see 4G LTE coverage in these areas and are welcome to use the network even before it officially launches. Sprint plans to announce commercial availability of 4G LTE in these cities in the coming months, at which point we expect coverage, performance and reliability to get even better. Eventually, the markets will fill in until coverage largely matches the existing nationwide 3G footprint. By the end of 2013, Sprint expects to have completed the nationwide build out of the all new 3G and 4G network.

Currently, Sprint offers the new 4G LTE service in 19 metropolitan areas: Atlanta; Athens, Ga.; Baltimore; Calhoun, Ga.; Carrollton, Ga.; Newnan, Ga.; Rome, Ga.; Dallas; Fort Worth, Texas; Gainesville, Ga.; Granbury-Hood County, Texas; Houston; Huntsville, Texas; Kansas City, Mo./Kansas City, Kan.; Manhattan/Junction City, Kan.; San Antonio, Texas; Sedalia, Mo.; Waco, Texas; and St. Joseph, Mo.

According to management consulting firm Chetan Sharma Consulting, mobile data is expected to comprise 95 percent of the global mobile traffic by 2015. Sprint’s network strategy, known as Network Vision, is designed to meet these growing demands. With Network Vision, customers can expect to benefit from an updated 3G network and new 4G LTE network, enabling expanded coverage, improved network reliability, better voice quality, and faster data speeds as the improvements are rolled out across the country.

“The mobile industry is going through an incredible change – smartphones, connected devices, and the seemingly unlimited supply of new applications and services are changing consumer behavior in dramatic ways,” said Chetan Sharma, founder and president at Chetan Sharma Consulting.

As part of its overall network strategy, Sprint is also doing a complete overhaul of its 3G infrastructure so that customers can enjoy better wireless signal strength, in-building coverage, and fewer dropped/blocked calls. These enhancements are now available to customers in several markets across the country, with significant deployment in Baltimore, Boston and Washington, D.C., and will continue to improve in the weeks and months ahead.

Sprint was the first national wireless carrier to introduce 4G on the WiMAX network in 2008 and began rolling out 4G LTE to customers on July 15 in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and surrounding cities

.Unlimited + Sprint 4G LTE = Game-changing wireless offer for customers

In today’s competitive wireless market, the value of unlimited has never been more apparent and Sprint is clearly the best choice in wireless. Customers with capable devices can combine Sprint’s all-new 3G and 4G LTE networks and enjoy unlimited data while on the Sprint network. Data usage continues to increase and consumers value Truly Unlimited data because it’s simple and straightforward – no metering, no throttling, and no need to share data, which increases the likelihood of a surprise monthly bill because of overage charges.

Coupled with unbeatable plans and fast devices, Sprint has been working hard to deliver the best customer experience in the past few years. The 2012 American Customer Satisfaction Index ranked Sprint No. 1 among all national carriers in customer satisfaction and most improved, across all 47 industries measured, over the last four years. And Sprint has been ranked Highest in Satisfaction with the Purchase Experience among Full-service Wireless Providers three times in a row by J.D. Power and Associates.

Sprint’s Network Vision project expects to be largely complete with the all-new network by the end of 2013. For the most up-to-date details on Sprint’s 4G LTE portfolio and rollout, please visitwww.sprint.com/4GLTE.

Looks like a good start for Sprint. I'm curious on the DC market though. This market has quite a wide array of locations that extend throughout Northern Virginia yet the update lists "Washington, D.C.-Arlington-Alexandria, Va."Is this just the start or is there some further delay? I spoke with Sprint on Friday and they indicated NV upgrades should be complete by mid October near Dulles Airport. I'm not assuming this means LTE but at least the backhaul improvements we need. Any ideas?

there are some cities missing, here is the full list

I added a few that was on your list, but wasn't on my PR that I received via email. However, there were more on my list that were not on yours. Weird. Thanks.

So I see the Tidewater and Northern Va areas LTE upgrades are on the way but what about the Capital City of VA? When will Richmond VA be getting the LTE network?

Deployment will happen over the entire market. Since Northern VA is a hodge podge of hundreds of communities, they must feel the only way to describe the communities is "Washington DC/Arlington/Alexandria."

As for NV upgrades complete near Dulles, there is no way to know what they are talking about. So much extremely varied info comes from Sprint CSR's, I do not know what they were looking at it. They often do not even know what they are looking at themselves.

However, there are two DC sites that are fully upgraded, and approx. 100 sites with 3G upgrades. More and more will be converted every week. And probably in the next 3 to 4 weeks, intermittent live signals will start showing up around the market in all kinds of places.

The Richmond market is not scheduled to begin Network Vision/LTE deployment until some time in 2013.

So it would be a good idea for me to try to switch phones until the Richmond market goes in effect? My phone service is terrible now. My Evo 3D had better 3G coverage then my new Evo.

This sucks......Sprint listed North Carolina, but mostly are non-city areas. Asheville and Charlotte are the only ones that are actually cities to make the list of getting 3G & 4G LTE set-up. Raleigh-Durham area needs this fix pretty badly.....smh....

If you use 4G WiMax in the Richmond area, you probably should wait.

Several of these cities are in the Raleigh market. Meaning that the Raleigh area will be start receiving upgrades at the same time. However, Raleigh has many more sites and will take more time to complete than Fayetteville, Wilson, Goldsboro, etc. I think they are just showing cities that will launch before the end of the year, and my guess is Raleigh/Durham will not be active until a date in January, just missing the PR cut off.

Grrrr. Looks as as if Raleigh Durham is falling behind.

Since we know the market is going ahead, but Raleigh seems to be behind, it makes me think it's backhaul related. Who is the ILEC in Raleigh?

The Evo LTE can only get the 3G coverage here in Richmond. I've had this phone since about June and I've never seen a 4G come up on the phone. My best performance with this phone is when it's connected to Wifi when I'm at home.

Yeah... what's the deal on the Raleigh area. I see Wilson, Fayetteville, Goldsboro, Kinston, Pinehurst, Lumberton, Rocky Mount, and Greenville. Various Western NC towns, but no Triad or Triangle towns. It's like they're actively avoiding the middle north of the state

I would guess that this PR is somewhat of a response to VZW's recent LTE comparison ads as well as preemptive move to assuage consumers ahead of a presumed LTE iPhone announcement in a couple of days.

Don't be ridiculous. Those cities are in the Raleigh/Durham market. They will not actively avoid one major city in the market. Either Raleigh/Durham was accidentally omitted in the list, that area has delayed backhaul, or they used a date like December 31st in their database, and RDU was just beyond (like Jan 1 or early January, etc.).

Sprint is not intentionally avoiding Raleigh. The deployment is being handled by Subcontractors, and they want to get as much work done as possible as soon as possible. There is no targeted effort to avoid Raleigh. It's preposterous.

I'm actually wondering what's the issue with Sprint Network and Richmond VA also. The 4G network wasn't that great when I had my Evo 3D. It was vary rare that the 4G worked. Mostly in the downtown area and certain spots on the Westend of Richmond. Now the new LTE network isn't rolling out until 2013!? Is there an issue with the towers in Richmond VA?

No problem Robert, they posted it on Facebook a little bit ago. I suppose they missed a few that were posted on the original PR but weren't on the post. But no matter. Good to see Sprint continuing the network upgrades.

Just wondering when they normally test a site with live 4G. Once a site is accepted as completed 3G/4G does that mean live testing is all done?

What happened to NJ? I thought the predicted initial launch for Central was November and Northern would be January although I was hoping for a 4G for Christmas :)

Interesting...they list Kerrville, even though there are no Sites Complete for that city (as a sponsor, I can see this). Yet Fredericksburg has a site complete and they don't list that. I wonder what their criteria is...

Looks like AJ and I are getting a treat this year from Sprint! I know some of the towers in the Lawrence, KS area have the new or improved backhaul because I would get around 1-1.5 Mbit north of town along 6th Street in Lawrence.

Thanks guys for jumping on this so quickly. I do not even post because I am just way too slooooow! I promise I did not eat lead paint as a child! :)

There was not a single city in the Mountain Time Zone and only LA in the Pacific time zone. I thought that San Francisco was under way and I swear I saw some 4G sites in the San Jose/Silicon valley area on the maps on this site. It seems like they failed to list cities west of the Rockies except for LA. Was this list simply thrown together from a much larger list or is this all we can expect in the coming months?

I think that its great they are making an announcement like this. Just enough to get customers excited and not make a jump.
