Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Wednesday, September 5, 2012 - 7:45 AM MDT

S4GRU has received a tip that Network Vision was spotted underway in the Austin metro area. We were able to send out a core member to verify. We are happy to report that Sprint is indeed under way with Network Vision/LTE deployment in the Austin market.

S4GRU Member ATX4G first reported the work at the site. Later S4GRU Member boomerbubba, went out to verify for this article. While at Site #SA14XC087, Boomerbubba was able to actually talk with one of the field techs working at the site, and offered this report:

This tower is definitely under active construction for NV. These guys are installing new panels and stuff. I chatted with one guy from the crew, who said they were a subcontractor working for Ericsson on 180 sites in the area. He confirmed that there will be new panels, remote radios up top, fiber run up the tower, etc. According to him, this tower will be live with 4G in a week. Actually, he said, "You'll have 4G in a week," which I take to mean the LTE signal will be ready for acceptance testing by somebody up the project chain.

There you go. Verification of the first Austin site. Most likely, there are many more currently under active deployment all around greater Austin at this moment. We also reported this weekend more activity in the Austin market with a new site at Ft. Hood Medical Center.

It looks like the Austin market is no longer being delayed and back on track with an active deployment. The original Network Vision schedule had work starting in the Austin Metro Area in June. So, it appears like it is starting 2-1/2 months later than originally planned. So perhaps we can expect an end of November launch and a January/February completion? By the end of September, they should be hitting their stride and we can better evaluate then. Stay tuned.

Interesting legacy panels, you can see the RF shields on those, instead of them being inclosed in the antenna. Not very aerodynamic for a low wind load rating!

also, do you know when boomerbubba and the tech spoke? so that we can retroactively start the "in a week" time frame?

It was last Thursday morning (8/30), I believe.

I live right across Mopac from the tower shown in the map above. Cant wait to finally get some LTE on my EVO. I hope this does explain some 3g issues ive been having though.

i tried to post from my S3 but when i hit comment the button wouldnt work. tower crews worked into dawn working on LTE site # 2 located off research and duval road. briefly spoke to the operations supervisor and he confirmed sprint is taking over the tower as part of the network vision program.

Looks like it might be about time to pull the trigger on upgrading my phone(s) to SG3, since the Mopac tower isn't all that far from where I live. The progress is really encouraging, and, once again, S4GRU is ahead of the 'official' Sprint verbage.

Looks like I'll have LTE while I get my Tex-mex at Chuy's soon!

Thats Great News!! Wife and I just got smart phones. Mine the S3 and Hers is the HTC EVO 4GLTE. Looking forward to 4G speeds.

If I am going past a Tower. What Am I looking for to know if it has been upgraded for 4G?

The physical work is likely complete. However, the only way you'll know is if the 4G icon appears on your Sprint LTE device. Hopefully, they won't block the LTE signal like they often do in pre-launch markets.

Seems like a bunch of us live in that area. I live right up the hill from the tower site. Already seeing > 3x the speeds: a 3g speed test gives me 700 kbps where before I was getting 180ish, and I'm sitting at work about 2.5 miles from that tower.

another site was being worked on yesterday off w. ben white near frontier trail! i thought all of the lte radios were mounted up at the top, these were at the bottom. maybe the work isn't complete yet. anyways i snapped a pic of the site which shows the gate open. the guys were eating lunch in their trucks and i didn't want to bother them.

I learned they are taking over some new towers, dismantling some old sites for whatever reason and installing the new stuff, if anyone comes across an old cell antenna i'd sure love to have one! i think it'd make a nice conversation piece... yes in the living room! i may even mount it to the wall, angle it and have a simulated radio with some hardline, flashing led's, and an internal fan to smiulate a cell site lol.
