Network Vision/LTE - Las Vegas Market

Lol the network had better be flawless by the time that the Raiders get here! That's more than enough time to work any kinks out.

With 3 years on the clock, they better have a super high class network in that area by the time the new Raiders Stadium is built.

Wow. You'd figure that places such as the Las Vegas strip would have small cells by now. So many buildings, signs, and decorations to lease space off of.

Sprint used to be very decent in the strip. Unless their leases weren't expired, the slow down is very odd.

Has Las Vegas deployed a 2nd B25 carrier?

Has Las Vegas deployed a 2nd B25 carrier?

I'm not sure if the 2nd 5x5 B25 carrier broadcasts independently or not. Out in Pahrump I get the 10x10 B25 carrier about 95% of the time, and the original 5x5 on rare occasions.

Every time I'm paying attention and have B25 while in Vegas it's 10x10 only.

The new stadium is on track for completion in 2020.

Just got back from a quick trip to Vegas.

Network has definitely degraded a bit. I experienced a lot of delayed MMS and SMS. Data works, but was slow in so many places.

One main issue is that some Casinos are still using 5 MHz LTE (original G block) while most of the macro network has switched to wider 10x10 carriers. Seems to have made my phone bounce around a lot and drained my battery quicker than usual.

Well at least I wasn't alone on the text messages. I experienced the same slow text messages several times in LV.

Leave the strip, and service goes to normal. Messages will arrive almost instantly and data would work flawlessly. Ping is even lower than it is back home.

Enter the strip, you may as well put your phone away and expect some messages to be lost or arrive late. It is very odd that Sprint hasn't gone and updated their casino DAS (at MGM resorts at least) from 5x5 B25 to 10x10. I'm sure that has to be causing issues with data. Handoffs from DAS to Macro are also an issue. I dropped a few calls when going from casino to outdoors and vice versa. Overall, the Vegas strip experience has gone down the drain. My gut feeling is that DAS systems need to be updated.

A surprising move by Sprint was to go with B26 only at the Excalibur Casino. That is a head scratcher. It worked very well, but why leave out older UE customers and the potential for a wider B25 LTE carrier??

With LTE still hit or miss on the strip, would it be better to just turn off LTE and use 3G? Or is that just dumb? lol

I just need to check emails and occasionally social media. I won't be streaming or downloading anything.

Don't get these assessments wrong. Internet browsing and light video still worked. I'm just comparing the network this year to last.

In 2016, messages, calls, and Internet worked flawlessly. I was able to pull down at least 60 Mbps when my phone was on Band 41 in the MGM/NYNY area. But in 2017, the phone rarely broke 5 Mbps on B41 in the same locations. (Off topic, but I highly recommend Shake Shack to both visitors and locals. Better burgers than that crap called In N Out)

Stick to LTE for data. My main concern was the massive drop in speeds and the SMS/MMS/Call reliability. MGM resorts added wifi to their lobbies/rooms, so data was never really an issue. Texts and calls was the thing that got me.

When I was there last July, LTE was almost unusable in the areas on the strip that I frequent. I had far better results when I switched to 3G only. So if its gotten worse, I might be in for a struggle again

I just got back from a week trip there. Service was awful on the strip. LTE was so slow iMessages would not even send, and this was on all different bands, including B41 "Spark". Rootmetric scores account for this change. 2016 Sprint was number 1 across the board, this year they dropped to third. It's a bummer considering B41 is Sprint's latest and greatest!

I'm sure they are planning to widen the DAS systems at some point.

They better for the sake of user experience. I had two dropped calls in Vegas. One was while walking out of the MGM and the other was while walking in.

I'm sure the DAS are a huge part of the problem for the strip. In the past year Sprint has seen their B25 carrier widen, their CDMA carriers moved due to spectrum swap, and B26 was deployed throughout the valley.

As far as explaining the congestion on B41 on the strip, maybe rf optimization has caused B41 to reach more people than it can handle. Last year around this time, B41 was fast, but it wouldn't reach any of the rooms I or my friends were in. This time around, I was able to get a combination of B41/B25 in all the rooms we had.

I travel to Vegas several times a year for work. The strip has gotten really bad for data and text messaging. Which is mostly what I use on my phone.

I'm usually in the convention centers which have DAS systems and the experience is a lot better. But not on the strip.

  • 3 weeks later...

Anyone go to EDC this weekend? Wondering how coverage was there.

Coverage outside the speedway was usable on B41, Inside the venue, service was ok for texting, sometimes hit or miss, but data was lagging, connected to LTE B25 second carrier as it showed B26 on Signal Check Pro while on  Circuit Grounds but nothing would open. Also noticed that I would fall back to 3G but no data either. When data would drop, my phone would connect to 1X800. Decided to put my phone on airplane mode to conserve battery and turn it on every hour to receive texts from friends.

From my experience going to EDC the last 3 years, 2017 service was the worst. Last year was connected to LTE and was able to upload pics and get push notifications from the Insomniac app. This year, zero.

On my way to LA today, and at&t B2 LTE is showing up on my phone outside of Sprint LTE coverage, yet I'm in Sprint native voice service range.

Oh and I forgot to say, I hope the network on The Strip holds up this weekend! The amount of cars heading to Vegas this morning is insane!

Unless they fixed it in the last couple of weeks, your experience is not going to be good, especially at the south end of the strip.

You can find pockets of decent service, but overall, it was not good. Some places it actually was horrible.  Give us a report after you complete your visit.  I have no idea why they can not seem to fix this.  It is a well established static issue that somebody needs to quit peeing around and fix.

I don't go near Vegas on holiday weekends. I make enough trips there just living over the mountains from there. I'm going to LA for the day and then back home to Pahrump, where it's all peace and quiet.

Interesting. Are you sure Sprint CDMA was available? If so, this is a big indication that VoLTE is close.

Oh yes, I've driven that roads for years and years and years. And my phone said Sprint while Field Test showed Bands 2 & 17. My friends phone was showing Sprint 3G only.

    • Has anyone checked Verizon n77 in areas with more than 100MHZ active? This spectrum has been fully available since August of last year.  Of course they are not typically using SA.
    • I updated my other s21 ultra factory unlocked to the latest firmware... It behaves like the S24 Ultra n38 or n41 depending on 80 or 100MHz or their nr- arfcn.
    • I see everything correct. The two ARFCN's you mentioned earlier and they idenitify as n-41.  using 4.832b SCP. Only using one TM SIM.
    • I posted this in the Nebraska Premier thread last week, but just wanted to share in this thread the progress that T-Mobile has made in filling in the great coverage gap known as Nebraska. Between late last year and this year, they have added 28 new expansion sites filling in the coverage hole, plus 11 Sprint site conversions in eastern Nebraska and far western Iowa. Notably, in the last month n41 coverage was added on over a dozen expansion sites in western Nebraska that were added to the network last year. For comparison, here is the very first map that I created in October of 2022 after we noted expansion sites outside of Sprint conversion in Lincoln and Omaha. It doesn't show any western parts of the state, but just know there was nothing besides roaming coverage and a little B12 coverage leaking down from South Dakota to the west of Valentine, NE.
    • Sent a copy of my DB in an e-mail just now.  Couldn't leave the house today but can hopefully get a screenshot when I'm out on another cell site tomorrow.
