Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Thursday, March 8, 2012 - 1:00 PM MST

Suffer from indoor coverage issues? Need a personal Sprint femtocell to supplant your indoor Sprint coverage? Enter in the Sprint Airave Access Point.

Sprint is running a new pilot program. Telesales will be letting new customers know they can get a free Airave if they have indoor coverage issues. Customers will be directed to sprint.com/airaveaccesspoint to order. Sprint has created a special team to manage this program.

There may be limits and certain terms and conditions that may apply. Established customers may also have some luck getting in on this promotion, even though they are not the intended candidates.

Feel free to sound off in the comments section below if you are able to score one of the units. Share your experiences. Good luck!

EDIT: Just to clarify...yes, Sprint has given away Airaves in the past. Their Retentions Dept. did have authority to give them out. But this is a new promotion with the Airave product. Now Sprint is dedicating staff specifically to this new promotion and being more proactive to customer concerns with indoor coverage issues, not reactive as a last resort before a customer leaves.

We already have had several Facebook fans and S4GRU Members post that they called and was able to get one.

I called last year because I was having a lot of dropped calls at work. They responded by insisting that they send me an Airrave to plug in at work. Needless to say, the government will not allow me to plug it in, but my sister's place also had no coverage inside and weak coverage outside. You could stand by a window and make a call. I set it up in the house on her 700KbPS DSL connection and it worked really well. The whole house was covered and it had about similar range that you would get out of a good WiFi router. It even allowed you to use the internet connection as if it was 3G data. I don't know if faster internet connections would function perfectly or if it would slow it down to the 3G max speed.

I read extensively about it online before plugging it in and the only complaint I heard was that the handoff between Airrave and cell signal was not as smooth as desired and some people would lose their call when they left the house and went to cell coverage.

I see the Sprint branded space heater in the photos, but where is the Airave? ;)AJ

It does look like a space heater! Or a wall mount A/C unit!

It does look like that in the picture, but it is pretty small. It's about the size of a router or cable/DSL modem.

Although I welcome anyone with indoor coverage to call, please do not just get one for grins. If your indoor coverage is good, you will see no benefit and may actually see problems.

Just an FYI.

(Though I am impressed with Robert's sources! Very timely as I just heard about this today. lol)

My e-mail box is open to anyone who wants to give me info!!!

Additionally, I do want to echo Duffman's points. I live within 250' of a Sprint "tower". So I have no use for one. And S4GRU members should not request one unless they need one. The more Sprint spends unneedlessly shipping Airaves to people who don't need them, the more likely they will have to raise rates in the future!

But there are lots of Sprint customers who will greatly benefit from this program.

So, If I tether with AT&T 3G then plug this device into the tethered laptop (set up to share the connection) can I create Sprint coverage using AT&T coverage?

Cellular Inception :o

I think I'll give it a go at my cabin.

I've had one for almost a year now. When I first activated my EVO 3D I couldn't send or receive text messages, I called Sprint support and they weren't able to help. As soon as I walked out of the Airave's range the problem went away and fortunately it never came back. Other than that and the occasional reboot I've never had any problems with it.

So you're no longer having any text message problems?

I've had mine turned off for a few months due to the texting issues. It was consistently an aggravation- random ones would be dropped, or they would get sent 3-8 times. I'm considering turning it on again and seeing if they have a update available to fix it.

Fingers crossed....

Officially, no. Unofficially, yes! :)

At least I found the link to the purported page. Maybe I can make my case better by losing the call when I am trying to order ( Not much of a stretch, Normally I will call from a landline in spotty coverage areas) http://now.sprint.co...e/?id16=airrave

Does the link we posted in the article above not work for you?

I take it this is the same model that has been out for quite sometime? I have had once since we moved to our curent house. My case was made pretty easy as the entire time I was talking with the rep they couldn't hear me very well and I keeps saying what. They even asked if there was somewhere better I could go to talk. I said this is my backyard if i go anywhere else we wouldn't be talking. Came in the mail about 4 days later. I have had issues with text in the past but they seem to be working ok now. other then that its been great.

It surprises me a bit they're pushing these towards new customers. It seems they'd want to throw these at people in densely populated areas that are over loaded. Though then again if it could cause interference, it could have a bad effect.

Airaves do cause interference problems in dense areas, like apartment buildings, etc. It seems that even existing customers are not having a problem getting one calling the toll free number. However, only people who actually need them should call.
