Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Tuesday, July 10, 2012 - 7:30 AM MDT

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...Minnesota. The Minnesota market has yet to be announced by Sprint, and may not be announced until as late as this Fall.

The Sprint Minnesota market encompasses most of Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. This includes the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul and suburbs), Duluth/Superior, Rochester, St. Cloud, Mankato, Brainerd, Bemidji, Winona, Eau Claire and La Crosse. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Samsung is scheduled to begin mobilizing their subcontractors around the market in late August. The first completed Network Vision sites are scheduled to start coming online in September.

Anticipated Sites Complete at Market Launch. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in April, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

Schedule details and the bottom line

Sprint has not yet selected a date to formally "launch" LTE service in Minnesota. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out, but we have attempted to do that. In looking at the schedule as of today, it would indicate a April market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if Samsung and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates before deployment in this market begins. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production is achieved.

Samsung needs to hit a production rate of approximately 65 sites per month to stay on schedule. This is a big chunk to complete monthly, but is doable with the appropriate amount of resources allocated.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by September 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

Was incredibly surprised to turn my iPhone 5's LTE on and have it actually work here in La Crosse WI at my house today. Located between UWL and Western Tech near State st. Bought the original evo 4g back in summer of 2010 and have eagerly waited this moment in Wisconsin for a long time. Can't figure out how to post my speed test screen shots but get 4 of 5 bars and 3/5 bars of LTE best 2 results were: 109 ping/ 15.49 Mbps Download/8.07 Mbps Upload and 89 ping/ 16.74 Mbps download/ 4.11 Mbps upload. Finally getting my money's worth

Really wish I could post a screen shot. Just got a 91 ping with 30.11 Mbps Download and 5.40 Mbps upload on full bars in the upstairs of my house. For Sprint 4g LTE I must believe that is quite impressive

Question regarding your map above that says "if Sprint launched the market in April, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time". Eau Claire, WI was listed back in November as lauching "within the coming months", but according to your map there is one tower way Northeast of Eau Claire and one way Southeast. Why are none of the towers in Eau Claire marked? Do you know something Sprint doesn't?

We know the same thing. Our info came directly from Sprint. However, Sprint started the market several months late and deployment is going slower than originally planned. It has allowed them to reorganize and plan deployment differently than they originally were limited to do, because more backhaul and infrastructure is complete. It allows them to have many more sites to choose from.

Initially, the backhaul vendor in the Eau Claire area could not get sites up in the beginning of deployment. But now they can meet the new schedule since they have slipped.

Thanks for the quick response Robert!!! So does this mean, unfortunately, we have no idea when the towers in Eau Claire will be updated?

Getting lte in Waite park (western side of st cloud) but only when I'm in one spot. 2 bars is bringing in over 10 on download and had 17 once! Any ideas when it will be in full swing around here?

I'm in Brainerd/Baxter and I have been able to pick up LTE service everywhere around Brainerd/Baxter except in the cities themselves (Downtown areas).  I picked up LTE on Gull Lake, Pillager(Tiny town West of Baxter), and all sorts of strange little places.  Wondering why they haven't yet rolled out in the downtown areas?  Kind of aggravating as Sprint's 3G service here in the area is pretty lackluster (if I'm lucky I'll pull around 300ms ICMP and just under 1mbps down, .25mbps up).  Anyone have an update on when Brainerd/Baxter will see LTE?  There are lots of us waiting (im)patiently! :)

No update in Duluth, MN. Sales Reps said last fall then December then January then March. Nothing happened yet, terrible coverage forget about 4g there's no 3g. My son waited, nothing happened so then he went to Verizon, he got an S5, a tablet and case and car charger for $150. I will have to leave Sprint too.

Duluth is a straggling area, no doubt.  You've gotta do what you gotta do for your needs.  We understand.
